It is learned that the Union Home Ministry has recently taken a key decision to further expand the jurisdiction of the BSF along the country’s borders. With this, BSF forces can now come within 50 km of the international border in the states of Punjab, West Bengal and Assam and arrest suspects, including conducting searches and seizures. Previously it was only up to 15 km. Sources in the Union Home Ministry said the decision would help strengthen national security and curb drug trafficking. However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly objected to the decision taken by the Union Home Ministry. He said the decision was against the spirit of federalism. She alleged that the Center was trying to infiltrate the powers of the states in pursuit of the BSF. She said she had sent a letter to the Union Home Ministry expressing her objections in this regard.
Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that she does not have any problems with the country’s borders and maintains good relations with its neighbors. He said there was no need to confuse the people in this regard. Peacekeeping is a matter for the states. He said the BSF should focus on issues within its purview and would have its full support. West Bengal is bordered by Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Mamata Banerjee has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to withdraw the notification issued by the Union Home Ministry extending the jurisdiction of the BSF.
